Café Bossa in Candon City: Food and History

Set on a Spanish colonial in Candon City, Ilocos Sur, is Café Bossa, a charming café worth visiting. It prides itself on its delicious gourmet dishes and its cozy atmosphere that you’ll surely love. I have been to this café several times already, and I can tell you how great my experiences are every time I visit the place.

Café Bossa in Candon City: An Overview

Actually, I have already heard of Café Bossa years prior to my first visit. However, I never really got the chance to explore the place because I was unfamiliar with Candon City. Add to the fact that the city is almost two hours away from Vigan. When I got the chance to visit this restaurant, I was not disappointed at all.

Café Bossa sits on what seems to be a Spanish colonial house along San Juan Street at Candon City. Its exterior has been embellished with colorful murals. This makes it easy for you to find the café, albeit it not having any noticeable signage. Add to the fact that it is the only antique house that you can see on that street.

If you are commuting, though, you can simply ride a tricycle. Tell the driver the name of this cafe, and they will already know where to take you.

The Interior

If you are like me who loves antique interiors, then you are in for a treat at Café Bossa. From its Spanish tiles to its brick walls and its wooden ceiling that seems to make up the second floor, the interior would surely transport you to another time. Add the warm lighting and its quiet atmosphere to the mix, and you will have a cozy ambiance that feels homey and quaint at the same time.

There are a lot of collector’s items, such as books and CDs, that you can find inside. Posters of famous musicians such as Led Zeppelin and Pearl Jam are mounted on its walls. Growing up listening to their music (thanks, dad!), I really was vibing with the place. The CDs, though, are not only up for display because they will play them during your stay. Hence, expect some rock music from the greats to serenade you while you enjoy your food and drinks.

Food and Drinks at Café Bossa

Now let us talk about the main reason for going to this restaurant – the food. Because this is a café, do not expect a full-course set of meals on its menu. They have a list of excellent dishes that they all make from scratch – all are homemade to perfection.

One of their bestsellers is the baked ribs. I have tried locally made ribs before, but the taste didn’t compare to the one at Cafe Bossa. The meat is tender and very juicy. For its price, I would think that you would get your money’s worth. This dish is a must for those who are looking for something savory.

I also liked their sundried tapsilog because I was to taste a distinct flavor that I don’t usually taste in processed tapa. Moreover, having tried bacalao fried rice for the first time is truly an experience. Their prices might be a little high-end, but you can really expect quality gourmet dishes that they make.

Gourmet Specialties

What I also love about Cafe Bossa are their gourmet specialties. I always buy a Spicy Tuyo whenever I go there. My family loves its savory taste with just the right kick of spiciness. The tuyo is not that dry or overcooked. As for the spicy ipon, I haven’t tried it yet. But this would call for another visit to the cafe so I could buy some.

Wrapping Up

Apart from their cozy atmosphere and excellent dishes, I also applaud them for being upfront in their political stance. It’s not something that you can usually find in an establishment in the province, but they are proud of being on the right side of history. And rightfully so. Not only do they have scrumptious dishes and rich history as their backdrop, but they also have a firm stand on things. That is why I really like Cafe Bossa.
